Zoey woke screaming, trying to escape the sheets that wrapped around her. In a second, Bear was beside her, holding her shoulders, trying to calm her down.

‘Hey, hey, easy. Zoey. I’m here.’

She just screamed harder and pushed his hands away. His eyebrows creased with hurt, and he half lowered his hand. When she realised he was the real Uncle Bear, not the eyeless, lipless monster from her dream, she crawled to him and pressed her head to his chest, allowing his big arms to wrap around her.

‘You were gone, and she didn’t knock, but the old lady came with rice in her mouth, and I didn’t want her to but she was there…and then she was you…she was…’ With her face against his shirt, she couldn’t even understand her own words.

‘Shhh, it was just a dream. You’re safe.’

His breath felt cool on her head, where her hair was wet with sweat. She peered around Bear to check the door. It was closed. A crack of grey light between the curtains told her it must be morning. As she shifted on the bed, the sheets clung to her skin, and she realised she’d had an accident.

She gasped and tried to sit back on the wet spot, to hide her mess, but he had already seen.

He wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes with his thumb. ‘It’s not your fault, my little one. Don’t you fret about it. There’s plenty of spare sheets and mattresses around. Easy fixed. Okay?’

She nodded, but couldn’t look him in the eye.

‘Hey, you hear that?’

Zoey sat back on her heels and listened. She shook her head.

Uncle Bear turned to the side and cupped his hands to his mouth. ‘Cock-a-doodle-doooooo.’ He spun to face her, his eyes wide. ‘You must have heard it that time. Sounds like a rooster right outside. He’s saying it’s time for breakfast.’

Zoey giggled. ‘That’s not a rooster. That was you!’

‘Really? Are you sure?’

She nodded, bouncing up and down.

Bear slapped a hand to his forehead. ‘I bet I know what happened. I ate an egg last week. It must have hatched in my stomach.’ He pounded his chest twice, swallowed, then let out another loud cock-a-doodle-doo.

Zoey stopped bouncing and stared. She scooted over and pressed her ear to his tummy. It was big enough to fit a rooster inside, but the sound was too gurgly and ribbitty, like it was full of frogs. She frowned and looked up at him. ‘Did you eat some tagpoles too?’

He laughed and ruffled her hair. ‘You know, I think maybe I did. Now come on, let’s get you cleaned up.’
